Unaccompanied children’s programme

Information

I have put together this information sheet to give you a good idea of the living arrangements while you are on holiday here and before you start, cut your clothes list in half!!!

Here is what you will need to bring:

Show Jacket and shirt – only if you are attending a horse show

Chaps, paddock boots or riding boots (not both)

Whip (short and strong)

Body Protector, this is highly recommended

Gloves

Spurs, spurs are not used much here

Jodhpurs – 2 or three pairs

Light rain jacket

Sweatshirt x 3

Dressing gown, PJs, slippers

2 smart casual outfits for visits to village, cinema etc

Bathing Suit – swimming in the local Hotel Pool is optional

Laundry bag

Wash bag for bathroom

Call Card (see contact info)

Band aids and muscle rubs for Blisters and aches

Optional

Seat Saver – this might be a good idea if you have a bony seat, Irish saddles are ‘general purpose’ mostly jumping style on Stubben make so they may feel heavier than what you are used to

CDs/DVDs – entertainment centre available

Candy – if you have a sweet tooth as Irish candy is not the same as what you are used to.

One or two books or games (cards, small board games)

You will need about €50 per week for ‘stuff’ – you will need extra for presents or if you want to buy riding clothes in the local saddlery. Please bring a photo of your own or favourite horse to show us.

Bring or buy here a disposable camera for some lovely shots of the Irish country side.

Arrival

Our booking system works from Saturday to Saturday. Some departing guests may have late flights so your room may not be ready until the afternoon. Should this occur, There is a den that you can rest in or depending on your arrival time, you might be able to ride straight away.

On your arrival day you should drink plenty of water (tap water is fine to drink in Ireland) and go to bed early. You will make friends instantly as all rooms are shared and most visitors don’t know anyone else either!

Please check your ticket for departure times so we

can arrange transport back to the airport.

Horse Riding

The Irish horse is bred for jumping and all our horses naturally have good jumping ability. Because of the confirmation of the Irish Sport horse, he is not as well suited to Dressage as the American Throughbred – so he will feel heavier in the hand and more bouncy than what you might be use to, he is also of a stronger build then a TB.

The stables open at 8am each morning. Here is a list of the general run down of the day

"Breakfast is a help yourself" form the Kitchen (cereal, eggs, cheese, bread, rolls, croissants, juice, yogurt, fruit etc. Anyone wishing to do early barn duties should report to the yard).

You should have your horse tacked up by 9.50am.

Riding is from 10am to 12.15pm each morning followed by grooming, cleaning tack and general yard duties.

Lunch is at the Lodge at 12.45, this is served in the kitchen (pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, soup etc)

Riding is from 2pm to 3.15pm each afternoon followed by evening stable, grooming, tack cleaning etc.

Dinner is at the lodge at 5.30pm each evening.

Evening riding is available at least 2 nights a week, more may be available depending on numbers. Evening classes are Monday to Thursday 7.30pm

Sunday riding is in the morning only so in the afternoon it is possible to either go swimming, or visit a local horse show

If you are tired or sore at any stage and don’t feel like riding just let barn staff know if advance. Don’t overdo the first few days riding as its hard to ride if you are aching!

Friday evening – Cinema and visit to the local shopping mall (optional)

Saturday – Swimming optional (available other bys by arrangement)

House Rules

Please take off your boots in the boot room, this is where all riding gear will be kept.

Kitchen:

Please help yourself to cookies, drinks or fruit at any time – if you would like something that is not there, just ask

Cover all food when using the microwave

Put dirty dishes etc into the dishwasher (wash if in the Den)

Please tidy up after yourself before you go to bed

The Den: The television in the den has only the four Irish channels , 3 in English and one in Irish. Sitcoms are very popular here but they are mostly reruns. There are videos and DVDs for hire in Adare village.

If there are other guests asleep, please keep the TV volume down low.

Laundry The Laundry is done at the lodge each Mon, Wed and Friday so leave your laundry bag in the laundry room when you are running out of clothes.

Bathroom: Please don’t spend too much time in the shower, leave hot water for the next one!

Put wet towels in the basket in the laundry marked "wet towel"

Please don’t leave the bathroom floor wet after your shower for safety reasons
