Turkey League at Clonshire this Christmas

December 1st, 2009

Our Sunday shows are well underway and everyone is looking forward to the Grand Final of The Clonshire Turkey League – Turkeys and Chickens as prizes are always very popular especially with the Mothers!

We have seen great numbers despite the awful weather, a good indication of truly committed riders –

Fluff our little pony is a firm favorite with the crowd as he always flashes so well – Cadbury and Nestlé are improving week by week with all the good schooling – the Maxi at over a meter is very busy with a good jump off against the clock keeping the crowd engaged.

Our new entries secretary is Ms Alice Foley and she takes her role very seriously – she does the results and has them posted before the end of the day for everyone to check their score – Tess then sends the results to the Irish Field for publication and our riders are absolutely thrilled to see their name in the foremost equestrian publication. So mince pies and mulled wine will be on offer to warm you up for the next few Sundays – put us on your list for a visit – http://www.clonshire.com

Autumn at Clonshire Equestrian Centre Ireland

October 23rd, 2009

Autumn brings with it a new vigor at Clonshire Equestrian Centre  - we decided to cheer us all up in this difficult time and revamp the indoor arena – this began about a month ago -we replaced our old kicking boards with brand new ones and they are painted a bright white – these are not right down to the floor so will help stop the creation of a track around the edges which can get quite hard with all the activity here – then  we replaced the dressage letters with new ones  and included the extra ones that make us all confused when looking for them!

Our surface is upgraded also – our old surface mixed with shredded rubber from car tyres – this is really bouncy and the older horses like Augustus and Kenry really love the feel.
All the ponies and horses were very spooked when they saw it first – they were expecting some scary thing to jump out under the boards! Dan bought a new toy for the tractor – a special rotavator that does a great job inside and also in the outdoor – so the place looks ready for serious action each morning.

September sees the return of Limerick University Equine Science programme – the students are all back and riding really well -they love trying out our new horses and giving their verdict – some really nice ones this year are Maverick and Neueveu – old favourites would be Voltaire and Guinness -

Many events are planned for the next few months to help pass the winter a bit quicker – Equi-Pilates, Stable Management lectures, Inter school showjumping and our ever popular Micro/Maxi showjumping competitions.

Looking forward to seeing you in the saddle soon.

Special Olympics Horse Riding at Clonshire Equestrian Centre

September 30th, 2009
Last week I attended the Press Conference for the Irish Special Olympics which are taking place next June 9th – 12 t,  2010 in Limerick
This is very exciting as there will be over 1,500 competitors and the riding is taking place at Clonshire –
Lots of events are being held at Limerick University, with Golf and Bowling, and Riding off site. The reception was amazing with lots of sporting personalities and politicians attending . Ian Dempsey was compare and introduced athletes from all the counties around Ireland. There was lots of loud music and clapping –
We are very excited about the riding – Jane and Johnny from Rehab in Limerick will be representing our county and we are already in serious training!
We will be looking for volunteers to help with the riding and also for some suitable horses and cobs – so do put your name down if you are free – you wont be disappointed as it is very rewarding.
We have an application in with West Limerick Recourses for funding for a Therapeutic Riding Centre, which would enhance our facilities and help our friends in Rehab, Bawnmore and others with disabilities to enjoy the pleasure of riding horses and seeing the world from a different height.
So its all systems go for the Special Olympics next year – tally ho !

Summer in Clonshire Equestrian Centre

September 18th, 2009
Summer in Clonshire – new home for well loved pony
During the summer we had a lovely visit from two pony mad young  girls from the North of Ireland and their parents –all rode each day making very good progress. Baby and Franklin and Chipmonk were amoung the favorite ponies for the girls and they spent ages playing and grooming and jumping –  One girl had her own naughty pony at home and had been called ‘supernanny’ by her friends for sorting out his bad habits! The other little girl did’nt have a pony and never expected to have one – however, her wonderful Daddy saw  her ride through the week and thought of a way to make her love him even more! On the last day as everyone was saying good bye to their favorite mounts, Baby was being made stand still for photos while the Dad had a quick chat with Dan and Sue to see about taking Baby up north for a whole new life – it all happened very fast and transport was organized for two days later to bring the pony up before the family had even arrived home!
Of course telling the two little girls that Baby was now part of the family was the best bit – the child could hardly believe it, the little friend was thrilled to have a riding buddy – needless to say Sue and Tess were  very tearful!
Then the news spread like wild fire through the pony club – lots of disbelief in the stables from both staff and junior riders – but everybody really happy for Baby – a better life, lovely place to live and a couple of ponymad girls to care for him – he deserves that after spending the last few years helping riders to canter and to take their first jump – he is madly missed here of course but what could be better for him so everyone is delighted.

CLONSHIRE VITO WINS AT DUBLIN HORSE SHOW 2009

September 1st, 2009
CLONSHIRE VITO WINS AT DUBLIN HORSE SHOW
Our little gray family pony  Clonshire Vito has been to Dublin Show for the last 3 years –each time coming home with a 5th or 6th rosette. This result would be all we could expect and more as he is a great jumper but has not got the step for the show piece.
Off we trotted again this year, with much the same expectations as before – if we could hold our own in the jumps we might be lucky and get a place.
Lydia has being doing a lot of riding all summer, eventing and dressage with two other ponies so Vito had been a bit neglected at the shows, and had not done a Working Hunter competition since the Dublin Show last year – so we were really a bit cheeky even going!
We had him plaited and spotless and were warming him up before her  turn so did not see  how the other kids had got on – in she went as we watched proudly from the rail – I then over-heard a lady say that there were no finishers so far – I butted in and asked what did she mean- she explained the other children had retired, fell off or were eliminated so far and as Lydia and Vito were last to go, they would win if they just finished!
We were shocked and by then worried that she would  be safe – needless to say they were both brilliant and cleared all the fences beautifully – the last one was a big hoop to jump through and the pony actually put his head down in case he hit it even though it was about 4 feet high above his head!
They were of course called back, but did not need to strip the tack, just a little show and the judge awarded them the coveted first prize in the class. The on lookers were delighted and strangers came up to congratulate us – but to us he deserved it so much as he tries his heart out and is loved so much by his rider – we are truly lucky to have him in our family and all these wonderful happy memories
